Detail : Tow of the prop BURLINGTON and bound from Detroit [where she had lain all winter with her cargo from Saginaw] for Cleveland, she broke loose in a gale. She drove ashore and went to pieces. Her crew was rescued by Canadian fishermen. Her anchor and chains were removed by the Canadian tug PILOT a few weeks later. Her owner later sued the skipper of the BURLINGTON, stating that the prop had not followed the safer south passage on Lake Erie, as promised, but had instead taken the more dangerous Pelee Passage.

The captain, his wife and three young daughters, as well as the crew all escaped in the VANCE’s lifeboat and were picked up by SAMOA. The VANCE went down in 40 feet of water, 2 miles west of the “Dummy.” Owned by McKenzie & Co, Buffalo. Master: Capt. Mason.

Detail : The vessel was reported as foundered by papers in 1881-2, when a full fledged expedition to find her was begun. The searchers used what must be one of the earliest metal detectors ever used in salvage work, and found the wreck in early September, 1881 off the mouth of Erie harbor. The copper , worth $200,000, was recovered the next summer.
Vessel shown is only VERMILION of record, but appears to be too small for this 350 t. cargo. She was out of Detroit in 1824.
NOTE: A problem with this report is that there is no record of the loss, only the recoverey of the cargo in 1881-2.

Detail : Bound Detroit for Buffalo, she had put in at Huron and caught fire when two men were carrying a large tin of turpentine and spilled its contents on the deck above the boiler. The boat quickly turned in toan inferno. Her hawsers were burnt away a short time later and she drifted away from the dock. She burned to the waterline, but most of her crew and passengers either made it to the dock or were saved by the steamer CHICAGO. The fire which destroyed the steamer ERIE the previous year was also caused by a container of turpentine. Owned by Gelston & Evans [Northern Transportation Co.] of Buffalo.
She may have been recovered and part of her hull used in the steamer NEW ORLEANS.
Also reported burned at Detroit in Nov, 1842, with the loss of 5 lives.

Detail : She foundered in a gale. The sole survivor was picked up on a small raft 2 days later. Most casualties died of exposure. Bound Mackinac Isl. & upper L. Mich ports for Chicago. Most contemporary reports of the number of casualties say about 50 were lost, but later reports revised the number downward. She had stopped at many small ports in Michigan on her way to Chicago from Cheboygan, Mich., so many of those who had embarked at those points were unknown. Master: Capt. Geo. Thorpe(d). Homeport: Chicago. Owner: A. Booth.
There were accusations at the time that she was overloaded, causing her cargo doors to be left open. These were confirmed in 1969 when the vessel was found.
When she came out, marine men said she was unstable, because of her narrow beam and high upperworks.

Detail : Bound Bay of Quinte, Ont., for Oswego, she broke loose from the tug C. P. MOREY in heavy seas. The tug towed her other consort in to Oswego and then returned to find the VICKERY. She was unable to locate the boat, but after several hours of scouring the area, she miraculously found the crew of two men and a boy, still alive. It turned out that the canal bout had foundered just a few moments before the MOREY arrived back in the area, and the crewmen had been trying to attract the attention of the tug ever since. The canal boat was owned by the skipper, Capt. Peterson, was worth only $1200 and was not insured for use on the lakes.

Detail : Blown on rocks and destroyed after having broken loose from the steamer INTER-OCEAN in heavy weather. Lifesaving Service rescued the 8-person crew by breeches buoy, with the aid of the revenue cutter JOHNSON. Bound Buffalo for Milwaukee.
Cargo partially recovered. Out of Buffalo
She was ashore on Spectacle Reef and expected to become a total loss in December, 1867. Heavily damaged in a storm-driven collision with the bark BUTCHER BOY in September, 1872.

Detail : Bound Saginaw for Cleveland, she caught fire around her engine while well offshore, burned to the hull and sank. Her crew took to her small boat and made it to Vermilion, Oh. , and the tug’s still-burning hull was towed there as well, where it was allowed to sink. Out of Detroit, owned by Alger, Smith & Co. Master: Capt. Wm. Rolls.The hull was later raised so that the engine and boiler could be removed.
