Build info       :  1903, Jenks Shipbuilding, Port Huron   hull# 25

Specs              :  265x38x20, 1961g  1218n

Date of loss    :  1915, Jul 24

Type of loss    :  capsized

Loss of life      :  835 [812 also given often]

Carrying         :  passengers

Detail              : The passenger steamer EASTLAND capsized while pulling away from her dock for an excursion. She was heavily loaded with passengers and rolled over in her berth, trapping hundreds inside. The ship’s design was the main factor – flaws included a shallow draft and high center of gravity, an inadequate ballast system and the addition of several lifeboats and their associated gear on her upper deck (done due to the post-TITANIC “Boats for All” law).  This was the worst disaster in Great Lakes history in terms of loss of life.

Recovered soon after, sold to U.S. govt and converted to naval gunboat U.S.S. WILMETTE [GX-13]. Scrapped in 1950.

Lake                : Erie

Type of loss    :  fire

Loss of life      :  100-175 of about 200

Carrying         :  household goods, merchandise

Detail              : The steamer, headed for Chicago, carried hundreds of Swiss and German immigrants bound for the  west. Caught fire four hours out of Buffalo after an explosion and burned to the waterline 6 miles offshore, then sank. Cruising along the south shore of the lake when the disaster occurred, she turned toward shore, but didn’t make it. The fire is thought to have started from a  demijohn of turpentine that was loaded just above the boiler. This was the worst steamer disaster up to that time and occurred at almost precisely the same spot as the burning of the WASHINGTON(qv), which had been the previous worst disaster. About 30 people were saved by the steamers DEWITT CLINTON and LADY. Several weeks later, after a severe thunderstorm crossed the area, more than 100 bodies were picked up by the steamer ROCHESTER and a Revenue Cutter. Master: Capt. Thomas Jefferson Titus.

The many salvage attempts began in 1842. A lumps of melted silver coins were removed from her hull in 1852 and 1853, and when her hulk was raised in July, 1854, there was over $200,000  in melted gold & silver specie in it.

Reported to have exploded the steam chamber of her engine, killing 4 or 6, on Aug 4, 1840, near Malden, Ont.. though this is perhaps a different vessel (see above).

Collided with the anchored steamer DANIEL WEBSTER off Bar Pt. one night in September, 1839.

Her skipper, the only survivor, was drowned in the same area  in a small boat two years later. There was great hue and cry over the validity of the story in 1882, when she was raised and found to have been weighted with rocks and had holes bored in her hull.
