Detail              : She was unloading sand at a dock when she was rammed by the freighter JOHN W. GATES and sank. Her enrollment was surrendered at Detroit Mar 25, 1912. She was raised in 1914 and towed to Marine City, where the McLouth Shipyard planned to turn her into a drydock. Plans never materialized, however,  and she sat there until scrapped in 1923.

Driven ashore by a 100 mph gale on Lake Superior in 1896. Recovery and rebuilding cost $50,000.

Detail              : She was bound downriver with a full complement of passengers when she hit a floating object and began to sink near the entrance to Sugar Island Channel in the southern Detroit River. Her quick-thinking skipper ran her to a dock on the Canadian side,  where her passengers disembarked without incident. The famous TASHMOO settled at the dock and later was declared a constructive total loss. Owned by White Star Steamship Co., Detroit.

She lost to the passenger steamer CITY OF ERIE in an exciting “Great Steamboat Race” in 1900.

Detail              : Towing the barge CANTON, she reportedly sprang a leak and sank after the rising water in her bilges put out her fires. Yawl was swamped in the scramble for safety. The two survivors, the captain & his son, were picked up by the passing steamer NORWALK.  Owned by her skipper, Capt. John Cornwall of Port Huron.  Raised Aug 12th, but it’s not known what happened to her after that. Salvagers said her hull was perfectly sound and she must have shipped seas from above.

Detail              : She was creeping through fog when she was rammed by the big steel freighter WILLIAM LIVINGSTON. After the collision LIVINGSTON drifted away and lost track of THEW. Fortunately the steamer MARY C. ELPHICKE answered her distress whistle and picked up her lifeboat-borne crew. The THEW went down in 80 ft. of water. Owned by H. R. Harvey of Detroit. Master: Capt. Patterson.

The wreck is a frequent dive target.

Detail              : Bound French R. for Manistee, she was caught in a storm and sheltered at anchor behind the island. There she caught fire and burned to the waterline. The Canadian prop GERMANIC rescued her crew. Master: Capt. W. G. Phelps. Owner: A. Cobb. Enrollment surrendered at Detroit, June 1, 1914.

Rebuilt from a prop to schooner at Grand Haven, MI,  in 1880, after sinking there,  but given engine from old prop AKRON (US#394) in 1881. Also rebuilt in 1884.

At least two died when her boiler exploded as she was trying to release herself from the Carrollton Bar on the first trip, Jun, 1875. Capsized and sank in the harbor of Charlevoix, Mich in June of 1901 when she was mis-loaded with a heavy deck cargo of lumber.

Detail              :  Bound Oswego for Toronto, she was caught by a storm and sprung a leak. Despite the efforts of her crew she began to founder and the crew plus the captain and his wife escaped in the smallboat just as she went down. They spent more than thirty hours adrift until the boat finally came ashore west of Whitby, Ont., with the occupants badly frozen, but still alive. Out of Oswego, sailed by Capt. “Three-finger” Jack Malone and  owned by his wife, Mary Malone.

Early in May of the same year she was struck by a gale when off Port Weller. She ran for the shelter of Presqu’ile, but was not able to wear in to the harbor.  She dropped anchors, but the cable soon parted and she went into shallow water. Bound Oswego for Toronto.

She had been bound Oswego for Chicago. Most of her cargo was later salvaged [1874].

Detail              :  Bound Montreal for lake Erie,  she caught fire and burned to a total loss only two miles from the beach. All of the women and children on the boat and most of the crew lowered her lifeboat while the vessel was still running ahead, and all were drowned when the boat immediately capsized. The survivors went into the water and were picked up by a boat from shore and the schooner MARY ADELAIDE. The hulk drifted to Cedar Island, where it burned out. She was a $35,000 loss. A newspaper stated that she had no good lifeboat aboard, and it later turned out that her skipper had sold 2 of her 3 lifeboats just prior to thew fateful trip. Her machinery was later recovered and installed in the prop AVON(qv). Out of Sorel, Que. Master: Capt. Patrick Campbell(d).

Detail              : She was driven toward shore by terrific gale. Her anchors were dropped as she  came close in, and they held for about an hour, but the ship finally dragged ashore, losing both her masts and breaking up as she struck. The one survivor was found crawling along the beach in a dazed state. Owned by R.G Rounsaveil of Chicago. Master: Capt. (Steven) Holford(d).

On her first trip from Chicago to Oswego she arrived after 8 days and 4 hours, the fastest passage up to the that time by a sail vessel. The next day the record was broken by 6 hours by the schooner SURPRISE.

Detail              : She tried to cutacross the bows of the Canadian sidewheeler KINGSTON, and rammed the larger vessel and sunk. She went down near the harbor entrance, where her crew and passengers were rescued from shore – some by the Lifesaving Service and the KINGSTON,  and many others by local boats. The captain and some of the five crewmen jumped to the KINGSTON as she struck, leaving the passengers to their own devices. Owned by Fixx Bros. of Charlotte and used in the excursion business from Charlotte to Seabreeze, NY. Master: Capt. Patrick Thorpe. The hull was later raised and towed into the Genesee River, where it was abandoned in a swamp south of the harbor.

Converted from a yacht, tug and packet to this excursion vessel in 1877 by H. Jewett of Buffalo.

Built as a package freighter. After a long career an many accidents she was condemned for poor condition in 1890. Rebuilt to a bulker at Detroit in 1890-91.

Detail              : Battered by a storm and sunk to her decks about 20 miles out, her crew abandoned and was saved by the schooner GUIDE in a daring rescue. TRADER was towed in with her decks awash and beached just outside the harbor by the steam barge S. C. HALL. A few days later, in the “ALPENA Storm,” her wreckage washed ashore and she was erroneously reported as another “all hands” victim of that storm.

She went ashore on Kelley’s Island and was not expected to survive in May of 1866, and three were killed when her boiler exploded on Lake Huron in Nov of the same year. Owner: S. A. Brown, Marine City.  Master: Capt. Frank Brown.

Detail              : She exploded in the Rouge R. a few minutes after leaving her dock, bound for Montreal. The captain ordered her abandoned and the crew and two women passengers aboard went over the side as the captain steered her for the banks.  His wife was one of those lost when the ship went over her after she went into the water. The ship caused a spectacular nighttime blaze on the river as the fire tug JOHN KENDALL fought for control. Owned by Tankers Transit Terminals, Ltd., Montreal. Master: Capt. Rudolph Tremblay.

The ship was later reovered and rebuilt at Port Dalhousie. She was lengthened to 243 ft and renamed TRANSTREAM. Scrapped in 1981.

Crowding on all of her sails to gain maneuverability, she capsized and began to drift in to the point. She finally struck with such force that she righted. Several vessels approached to see if she needed assistance, but none could come in close enough. The survivors struggled against the cold for five days until rescued by the propeller PORTSMOUTH. One of the lost was the wife of the mate. TRAVELER had been bound Monroe, MI for Buffalo and had made it as far as Ashtabula before being driven back. Owned by J. Prouty of Buffalo. Master: Capt. Detail              : She caught fire from unknown causes  and was quickly destroyed at a her wharf. Two of her crew were trapped by the flames and a third jumped overboard to escape and was drowned. A wrecking expedition to the boat in Nov, 1899 determined that the hull had been damaged beyond salvage by wave action.

Registered out of Wallaceburg, and owned by W. D. McCrae  and sailed by Capt. D. F. McCrae.

There were several later vessels of this name. One 30 tonner [b. 1838, Detroit] was wrecked a in collision off Bar Pt. Lake Erie, in 1857, and recovered in July, 1858, but didn’t return to service until May, 1860.

Detail              : She struck bottom just off the harbor entrance lighthouse and broke  up. She’d been in tow of the tug PROCTOR with HATTIE L. JOHNSON(qv) and 3 other barges. Her crew made for shore in their boat, but it was too rough to land, and they were taken off by the Oswego Lifesaving crew. Owned out of Prescott, Ont.

Usls report claimes she was an American vessel, but she does not appear in ‘84 mv and the vessel shown is listed in N.A.C. as the one lost at Oswego.

Detail              :  She left South Haven to lift her nets in a moderate blow, but it soon turned into a powerful storm and blizzard. The tug made for shore as quickly as she could and beached 5 miles north of Benton Harbor. The tug was a total loss, but her crew was able to swim to shore through the breakers. Owned by Chris Jemsen, Muskegon.

She started out as a passenger vessel, was converted to fish tug after 1922.

Detail              :  Bound Traverse Bay for Chicago, she sprung a leak in a gale while between Milwaukee and Racine. By the time she reached a point just north of Chicago the water had gained so far on her pumps that the crew abandoned. They were rescued by the small schooner NASSAU and the Goodrich liner CHICAGO. Owned by Capt. Plumstead, Chicago and out of that port. Master: Capt. Johnson.

Rebuilt at Buffalo, 1859 and at Benton Harbor, Mich, in 1864.

Detail              : She was rammed by the 1000 ton steamer D.C. WHITNEY (qv) and completely destroyed [even engine was smashed]. Her crew and the  Flats Canal workers who were aboard were rescued by steamers GEO. H. RUSSEL and  MARIPOSA. Owner: John P. Nagle, Toledo. Master: Capt. Chas. Abar. She had been in use as a tender for the Flats Canal project. The wreck was later struck by the steamer BRANSFORD.

She was a serious obstruction to navigation and local shippers petitioned the government to remove her.

Detail              :  Collided with the propeller WAVERLY and sank to her decks. The propeller took her in tow and dragged her 15 miles to Bailey’s Harbor with the scows crew standing atop her cargo. It was expected that she would be raised, but no record of that. A week later the schooner WARREN arrived to salvage her outfit and cargo, but had to tear her decks off to complete the job. Out of Racine. Master: Capt. Doad. Last known registration, Apr, 1877, but she was still in registry in 1879.

Her position at the dock was such that firemen could not reach her and she burned to the waterline, along with the tug  DOUGHBOY(qv), lying alongside. Owned by Cowles Shipyard Co., Buffalo. She was formerly a fish tug owned by Ira Rose of Dunkirk, NY.

Detail              : She collided with the  prop W. P.. KETCHUM and sank while bound for Racine. The little boat went down quickly in 35 fathoms of water, taking the yawl and part of her crew with it. Owned by H. Henderson, Cleveland or J. P. Nagle, Toledo. Master: Capt. John Griffin, who had been the only survivor of the loss of the schooner ST. PETER the previous fall.

Rebuilt in 1873, major repairs in 82 & 84. ‘84 repair was after a serious grounding on Amherst Island, Lake Ontaio, Sep 26, 1883.
