Also knocked down by a white squall Jun 18, 1872 on Lake Huron. Crew rescued by the passing schooner STARLIGHT. Master: Capt. David Bouthwell. Owner: M. M. Wheeler, Oswego.

One source reports her as a scow-schooner.

Detail              : Bound for Chicago, she was driven ashore and demolished. Eight passengers [including an entire family of 7] & 1 crewman were lost. The remainder of the crew made it to the shelter of the brig OLIVE RICHMOND, which had gone ashore nearby. One young woman passenger was later found in the cabin, frozen solid in an upright position, with arms outstretched. She was later recovered and is the same vessel as the 1844 wreck (below). Owned out of Chicago by J. Ransom. Master: Capt. William Dougall.

This vessel is mentioned many times in early Great Lakes lore.

A schr THOMAS JEFFERSON was reported wrecked at Chicago with the loss of 2 lives in November, 1839. Owned by Hugunin and sailed by Capt. Keeler.

Detail              :  Bound Chicago for St. Joseph, she was overwhelmed by a storm when approaching the latter port and sank up to her decks. Master: Capt. Dougall. Her crew clung to her ice-coated rigging for eight hours until rescued from shore by a hastily-formed group of lifesavers in a rowboat. The rescue crew was led by Capt. Nelson Napier, who was skipper of the steamer ALPENA(qv) when that vessel was lost in 1880. Capt. J. Prindiville,at the time an 18-year-old crewman on the JEFFERSON, related this story in detail after the ALPENA was lost.

The fire destroyed all of NDDs floating stock including the dredge DULUTH, the tugs ELLA G. STONE, MENTOR and this tug as well as five or six scows.

Nearly destroyed by fire Nov 3, 1910 at Duluth.

Reported destroyed by fire Oct 1, 1892, but recovered and rebuilt (brand new at the time or maybe the fire was to AGATE).

Sold U.S. 1888 after capsizing in Saginaw Bay and then drifting ashore near Port Hope, Mich. She was then purchased by Jenks, rebuilt and renamed.

The tug had been laid up in the canal since the fall of 1877, and had just been raised preparatory to putting her back in service. Detail              : Bound Toronto to Kingston, she drove ashore after dragging her anchors in a gale, and became a total loss of $34,000, vessel & cargo. She had come under the point for the night and anchored to ride out the gale, but the wind shifted during the night, driving her ashore. A desperate effort by locals on shore failed to save her crew, who had clung to the rigging until they dropped off one by one and perished. Out of Port Stanley. Master: Capt. John Shevlin(d).

The loss of this vessel helped stimulate the government in to suveying the adjoining bay for conversion to a harbor of refuge.

She was built on a farm near Sebewaing, Michigan and hauled 4 1/2 miles to Saginaw Bay over frozen ground by 16 spans of oxen.  Built as a small 3-master, she was converted to a 2-master the next year.

Detail              :  She had just left Erie, when she sprung a leak and was turned for shore,  she foundered on the way in. Her crew took to her boat and made it to shore safely. Owner: J. L. She was run ashore to prevent her sinking after colliding with the schooner LIVELY off Sheboygan, WI, in Sep, 1866. Damage heavy.

Detail              : Bound Chicago for Buffalo she beat all the way down L. Huron during a succession of several storms, but was finally blown ashore 2 mi W of Fairport and sunk. Her crew climbed her rigging, but she came broadside to and dipped them in the icy water with every roll. She finally washed them to their deaths one by one before help could arrive. The farm on the bluff above her, and which had sent to the town for help to the unknown schooner below, was actually the home of the JOHNSON’s lost mate, who had been put in charge of the boat by his brother,  Capt. Solomon Snell, the skipper and owner.

Detail              :  Having lay idle for several years near the Detroit elevators, she apparently became bored, slipped her moorings in the night and went sailing down the river. After scudding to and from on the river for some time, she took a sheer and stuck herself into the bank on the Canadian side near the slip of the rail transfer ferry HURON, where she was well out of the way of her fellows. She apparently was never recovered and may lie there still. Owned by J. J. Boland, Buffalo.

Detail              :  Sprung a leak in a gale and run for shore when the water began to gain on the pumps. The vessel being too small fo a yawl, her crewmen jumped into the lake and swam safely to shore. The vessel soon  foundered 1/2 mile offshore.  Owned by W. H. Whte and her skipper, W. H. Sargent, both of Chicago, and out of that port.

Detail              :  Bound Milwaukee for Menominee, Michigan, she had hove to in the canal to shelter and await better weather. Late that night she was discovered to be afire and her crew had to jump for it or burn. She burned through her moorings and began to drift down the river, but was captured and towed back to her moorings, where she burned to a total loss.  Owned by Capt. Connelly and Mrs. C. Sheriff, Milwaukee. The hulk was later moved several times, ending up nar the Leatham & Smith Dock at Sturgeon Bay.
